About GLOSS

GLOSS (Glasgow Library of Synthesized Sound) is the UK’s first non-profit synth library. Our collection has been built through donations and loans from organisations, musicians, and individuals who share our ethos: making electronic instruments that would otherwise be out of reach accessible to the wider community.

The Space

  • Workstations: There are 7 workstations. Each has a different type of mixer - some are suitable for multitrack recording, stereo recording and some for tape. Let us know at the start of a session if you have specific requirements, and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

  • Headphones: Everyone works on headphones. Headphones and splitters are available if required.

  • Instruments: Participants may swap out instruments during the session. Always speak to a librarian before taking instruments from the shelves, and make sure you are using the correct power supply before plugging anything in. Librarians can help with setup if needed - don't be shy to ask - that's what we're here for!

Health & Safety

  • Drinks must be kept away from workstations. Please use the seating area for drinks.

  • Keep leads and cables tidy to avoid trip hazards.

  • Report any damage or technical issues to a librarian immediately.

Working Together

  • Collaboration and conversation are encouraged! Please be mindful of the volume of conversation, as everyone is working with sound and headphones can make people speak louder than intended.

  • Librarians will help get you set up and answer questions, but Open Sessions are not one-to-one tutorials. Librarians are responsible for supporting the whole room.

Further Learning

If you are new to this and want a more structured introduction, GLOSS runs workshops on:

  • Synthesis

  • Modular systems

  • Sampling and sequencing

  • Effects and processing

  • Live setup

and more

Details of upcoming workshops will be announced soon.

Open Sessions are a chance to explore, experiment, and share. Be respectful of the equipment, the space, and each other. Most importantly, ENJOY! :)
