Applications Now Open for ITEM: Introduction to Electronic Music
What is ITEM?
ITEM is a hands-on workshop series dedicated to the exploration and creation of electronic music.
Designed to foster both practical skills and a sense of community, ITEM encourages the importance of play and experimentation through creativity as an end in itself. Whether you're new to music-making or an experienced producer, ITEM offers a welcoming environment to learn, collaborate, and create. Thanks to the support we've received from Creative Scotland and other organisations, we are able to offer ITEM entirely free to participants - although spaces are limited.
As well as expert guidance and support, participants will be given access to Glasgow Library of Synthesized Sound's expanding library of electronic instruments as well as being given a free permanent license to Ableton Live.
Group-based classes will foster conversation, collaboration, and diverse experiences, with hands-on support from experienced musicians. Our curriculum will highlight the contributions of women, LGBTQI+ individuals, global majority artists, disabled and neurodivergent artists, and working-class pioneers, emphasising the liberatory and radical potential of electronic music and its cultural impact.
ITEM consists of two levels of group workshops:
-
Level 1: Perfect for beginners or those with limited experience in electronic music. These sessions cover the basics of synthesis, sampling, sequencing, effects, and live performance. Participants will also explore the rich history of electronic music and its cultural significance.
-
Level 2: Tailored for more experienced electronic musicians, these workshops delve into advanced techniques and focus on the creation of collaborative music. Participants will have the opportunity to explore GLOSS’s unique library of instruments and push creative boundaries.

Who is it for?
ITEM is open to anyone aged 18 and over who is curious about electronic music. Whether you’re looking to start your journey or refine your skills, ITEM has something for you. We actively encourage applications from members of groups who face barriers in electronic music, including women, non-binary people, disabled and neurodivergent individuals, and those from socially or economically marginalised backgrounds.
When and Where?
The workshops will take place in a central location in Glasgow - venue TBA.
Workshops take place in the evening from 6pm-9pm with a break in the middle (although participants are welcome to take breaks at any point).
Two cycles of our series of workshops will take place - one beginning in February-April and one starting in May-July. Level 1 workshops will take place on Mondays or Tuesdays (you will be asked your preference when applying) while Level 2 workshops will take place on Wednesdays.
